The Gig

What's a Gorillagram, exactly?

We show up — in full gorilla suit, bongos and all — to someone's birthday, office, wedding, hens party, or any occasion worth celebrating. We deliver a custom poem, we perform, we make people laugh (and sometimes cry happy tears), and we leave them with a memory they'll talk about for years.

It's live performance at its most gloriously unhinged. If that sounds like your kind of thing, read on.

The Opportunity

We're not asking for a big commitment upfront. Most of our performers start with a single gorillagram job — a chance to try it out, see if you love it (spoiler: you will), and decide if you want more.

As interest in Gorillagrams grows across the Wellington region, we're building a roster of talented, reliable performers we can call on when the bookings come in. There's no pressure — but for the right people, there's real potential for regular, ongoing work.

We fit around your acting career — not the other way around.

We know that for many actors and performers, Gorillagrams is one part of a bigger picture. Maybe you're pursuing film and television work. Maybe you're doing stage work, commercial acting, improv, or building your own creative projects.

That's fantastic — and we actively support it.

If a film role comes up, take it. If you get called for a TV audition, go. If you're booked for a theatre run, we'll work around it. Your acting career is yours, and we would never want to hold you back from pursuing it.

For performers who are keen on a longer-term relationship with Gorillagrams, there may be opportunities beyond individual gig work as the business grows — including helping develop new characters, performances, and experiences.

Who We're Looking For

You don't need to be a gorilla expert.

You do need to be a person who loves making people happy and isn't afraid to commit fully to a character. Here's what we look for:

Confidence in performance — you're comfortable performing in front of a crowd, even if it's just one person and their office.
😄
A genuine sense of humour — gorillagram moments are joyful and a little ridiculous. Embrace it.
🤝
Reliability — when someone's booked a gorillagram for their mum's 70th birthday, you can't cancel last minute. We need people we can count on.
🎭
Acting or performance background preferred — but not essential. If you have the personality and the commitment, we can work with you.
🚗
Wellington-based and mobile — gigs can be anywhere in our service area, so your own transport is a big help.

How It Works Legally

Working with us as an independent contractor.

Performers who work with Gorillagrams do so as independent contractors, not employees. Here's what that means for you in plain language:

What independent contracting means

You are your own boss. You accept the gigs you want and decline the ones you don't. There's no obligation to accept every booking we offer you.
You set your availability. We won't tell you when you have to work — we'll reach out when gigs come up and you let us know if you're available.
You can work for others. Working with Gorillagrams does not restrict you from working for other businesses, agencies, or productions — including other entertainment companies or direct acting work.
You manage your own tax. As a contractor, you're responsible for your own income tax and ACC. If you're not sure what this involves, IRD's self-employment guide is a good starting point.
We'll have a written agreement. Before any work begins, we'll set out the terms of your engagement in a simple written contractor agreement — including the rate for each job, what's expected, and how we work together.

Your rate and payment

Payment rates are agreed on a per-job basis and will be confirmed before you accept any booking.
Payment is made after the job is completed, within an agreed timeframe.
Travel costs may be included depending on the location of the gig — this will be discussed at the time of booking.

Note: Gorillagrams' contractor arrangements are structured in accordance with the Employment Relations Amendment Act 2026. If you have any questions about the arrangement before committing to anything, just ask — we're happy to talk it through.
